Pop Culture Moments from 2022

Where do I start? 2022 has been a year of many emotions but has given us some iconic moments. I’m going to be talking about my top 5 moments from this year so enjoy.

  1. Midnights Album dropping

First thing’s first I need to mention the year Taylor Swift has had this year after dropping her surprise 10th studio album on 21st October 2022. She initially announced the album whilst giving her acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards and let me tell you I was obsessed.

I think what made this album so iconic is that we weren’t expecting this which made me appreciate it so much more. The album marks Swift’s first body of new work since her 2020 albums, Folklore and Evermore. Midnights is a concept album about nocturnal contemplations, written and produced by Swift with longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff.

Then when we thought we could finally chill out and listen to the new album on repeat, she realised a 3am edition with bonus tracks on there. Midnights has been on repeat in my house since it came out so thank you Taylor for making my 2022 a little bit better. I might lie to you and say that this is only going to be the time that Taylor is going to be mentioned in this but I’m a Swiftie and I can’t do that to myself.

2. Taylor’s Era Tour announcment

Again, another announcement made by Miss Swift that none of us saw coming. Some of us did listen to those rumours that a tour was going to be happening but we didn’t think it would be this soon. There’s some moments in your life that you wish that you lived in another country; this is one of them. I will be jealous of everyone who lives in America and posts about it on social media. I will cry, probably will be ugly crying at all the TikTok videos that get posted.

I love the whole concept of the tour that we get to go back and experience these era’s of Taylor’s life all over again. I think it was pretty clever how she announced all the support acts will little emoji’s next to it which some people have said represent the albums she will be singing at that date – imagine if she song all of her albums.

For now I’ve got to wait patiently for Europe dates to be announced and hope that I don’t spend all my money till then. Fingers crossed the whole Ticketmaster fiasco doesn’t happen again.

3. Louis Theroux’s Rap

If you haven’t heard of Mr Theroux’s iconic TikTok sound then where have you been this year? Amelia Dimoldenburg has had many hilarious interviews on her Chicken Shop Date show, but her episode with Louis Theroux ended up being one of the biggest cultural moments of 2022.

Dimoldenburg asked Theroux if he remembered any of the raps he wrote in the noughties, prompting him to serenade her with a catchy song that included the lines “my money don’t jiggle jiggle, it folds.” Then, a TikTok remix of the rap became a viral dance, and then somehow we got to a point where Shakira performed it on the Tonight Show and Snoop Dogg, Rita Ora and Megan Thee Stallion all danced to it on their social media.

4. Beyonce’s Reinassance

From one iconic Queen to another. It had been years since Beyoncé released an album and boy, Renaissance did not disappoint. Not only was it a celebration of music legends past, but also an incredible collaboration with living artists. Positive reviews came flooding in, calling it a “maximalist tour de force” (which it was!) and “Break My Soul” became the soundtrack of the summer, featuring in almost every club mix.

Renaissance is the seventh studio album by American singer Beyonce, released on July 29, 2022, by Columbia Records. Her first solo studio release since Lemonade (2016) and the first instalment of a trilogy project, Beyoncé wrote and produced the album with various of other people including Nova Wav and Beam.

5. The Infamous Slapgate.

This was a moment absolutely no one expected at the Oscars. In March, Will Smith walked onstage and slapped Chris Rock for making a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith. Essentially, Rock quipped that Pinkett-Smith looked like ‘GI Jane’, which prompted Smith to leap out of his seat in anger (Pinkett-Smith has alopecia – an autoimmune condition which causes hair loss). After walking back to his seat, Smith shouted “keep my wife’s name out your fucking mouth” at Rock. As a consequence, Smith was banned from the Oscars and other Academy events for ten years, but many stood by the actor, saying he acted to protect his wife’s feelings.

Months have passed and he’s now apologising for his beahvior when he should have done that in the first place. All it needed was Chris and Will to handle it out of the public eye instead of doing a stand up show and involving it in your material or doing an interview on it.

I hope this has helped you re-visit some things down memory lane. I wanted to say Merry Christmas and a happy new year from the team at Fan Girls: World Tour. May your 2023 be bigger and better than the last.
